An inverter is an electrical device capable of converting DC voltage into AC voltage, or direct current into alternating current. Because they produce direct current, on-grid solar power facilities always require an inverter to convert their product into alternating current to be fed into the grid. Only off-grid facilities used to power appliances requiring direct current are not typically equipped with an inverter.
